I was just finishing up an article about brown paper when I got the urge to make something on brown paper. Actually it was this piece of lace that started the idea rolling. Because I work at home, I can get up and do something before it goes out of my head. I'm not much for taking notes unless I absolutely have to.

 Work in progress, continued.
So much more stitching to be done, and more appliqué...

Work in Progress. A good occupation for a cloudy, sometimes rainy, Saturday.
I cut the pieces of old linen before I dyed them because I wanted the edges to get some colour, too. Then I stitched them down on a heavy background fabric, another old piece of very fine Japanese wool fabric, so fine that it feels almost like cotton. There's a LOT of stitching to be done and some embroidery and applique.

The fire alarm went off the other day. So we dutifully got out of the building. I noticed two young women sitting on the grass with ... a rabbit, a beautiful big rabbit. Many of the residents have pets, but I've only seen the dogs and cats. So I joined the girls and they let me pet the rabbit. Let me tell you, I never looked at rabbits twice, but this one was the sweetest creature in the world.

It reminded me of my childhood, and a song my aunt used to sing to me along with gestures telling the story. It went like this:

In a cottage in a wood
A little man by the window stood
When a rabbit (la la la, I forget the words)
Knocking at the door.
Help me, help me, help, he said
All the hunters shoot me dead.
Come little rabbit, come to me,
Happy you shall be.

And it inspired this work in progress.

I see it first. I see shapes in fabric or paper. My very good friend gives me pieces of fabric and I saw in this piece of lace a body shape. It morphed into this quilt. Body image, fraught with difficulties, which gave rise to the strip in the middle: pas de panique/don't panic.

Sometimes the vision works, sometimes it doesn't. I think this time it worked. Try as I might I couldn't get the photo right. The sage background comes out too grey.

Now I'm tackling another large piece, one that I've been planning in my head for a long time. Still a work in progress as it is being hand-stitched.

WIP

Work in progress.
Aren't we all.

I'm tired so not many words today. I will be curled up with a book and have an early night.
See you tomorrow!
