Lest we forget

[view series here]
I've completed Nos. 7 and 8 in my First Nations series. I've incorporated photos of people from different Nations, some hauntingly beautiful, and artifacts from my collection. This photo is of Czele Marie, a Pima, and the beaded leather is Ojibway.

In Canada the Native Americans are also called, very appropriately, First Nations. They were here millenia before the Europeans arrived. For all that was done to them, they survive. I've always felt a kinship to the Navajo in particular, partly because of their tradition of "balance" in all things, partly because of their ability to survive under the worst conditions imposed on them by other human beings. Kit Carson and his Ute scouts are one example. They drove the Navajo off their lands and I won't go into the atrocities they committed. The Navajo prevailed in the end (The Long Walk).
The rest is mysterious, so I can't explain it.
Peace.

It's Monday -- again

I took myself off to The Workroom yesterday afternoon to say hello to Lisa and her ATC group. It was worth the long streetcar ride. I really, really liked the space, so hats off to the owner, Karen. The Workroom has a row of sewing machines and piles of gorgeous fabrics and other essentials -- everything you need to do your sewing if you don't have a machine at home.

As a bonus Cori was there, Martha and Ray dropped in briefly, and the house doggie just wanted to be stroked and petted and...ended up giving me a slobbery kiss right on the mouth. What staggered me was how clean her breath was.

These two fat quarters called out my name.

Let us have tea....

[collage (c) colette copeland; image (c) teesha moore]

For a long time, when asked how I put together my collages, I didn't have a clear answer. Then I came across this description that fits my process exactly:
long pre-meditation, swift execution.

Exactly.

This piece resides in Wales; it was a gift to one of my staunchest allies. It's evening there now, so I'll just say Nos da.

Weekend update

(new work available on eBay)
I love my work. I love dreaming up new ways to old things. I've had these Teesha Moore collage sheets for years, and now I'm finally using them. Why did it take so long? Because everything has its time. You can learn a lot through art, and that's one of the things that I've learned and it applies to life in general.

Everything has its time.

Friday's child

I've been sticking close to home because of a mild head cold and tackling some projects I've been asked to make. I was happily enlisted to contribute to Somerset Studio's With One Stamp feature -- and there's no time like the present.
I plan my projects chronologically, but frequently I'll start several at the same time, and go back and forth. It works for me.

Words to live by

Fred

[ATCs available on eBay]

There's a bird outside my window with a squawky chirp that talks for about 5 minutes every morning at 2 a.m. I think it's suffering from insomnia because the chorus never begins before 4 a.m.

I've named it Fred.

Large tags

I like very large tags because you can make a piece you would ordinarily make on paper, but a tag has a built-in hanger! These tags are 8 x 4 inches.

A Room of One's Own

I could live in this room, exactly as it is. A worktable, a bed, and a squishy, faded couch is all it needs. Maybe an espresso machine....

A new day

She is my alter ego. Check her out here!
I've restocked both my eBay and etsy with new items....Mother's Day is on the horizon.
Have a wonderful week.

Weekend update

[new work now on eBay]

There are times when I fully understand the term "starving artist": it's not a term that I like but I fully appreciate that it happens. It's a test, I think. It's when you continue making art even though you have to count your pennies and do without, and do everything you can to keep body and soul together so you can continue creating. This is when you know, without a doubt, that you are doing what you're meant to be doing.

And so I continue to create.

It helps, of course, to have people who pull you up, like my friend Lisa who gave me a much-needed pep talk (thanks, Coach). And my close friend Marina, who is such a good and honest friend that she truly moves me. And then, those who are in other countries, like my sister (my staunch ally), and Sandra, who in her lilting Welsh voice lifts my spirits.

Words

[collage available on eBay]
I love found words.

Yesterday I went through my local library's discard pile, where books are sold off very cheap (and I'm very happy to rescue old, battered books, as well as contribute to the library). I go through all of them and pick out the ones most interesting to me, both for covers and text. As you can see in the photo.

Bonjour

[painting vailable on eBay]
Another imaginary landscape. It turned out to be a cross between Provence and Irish cottages.... whitewashed Irish cottages in a provençal setting. This is what happens when you don't censor yourself.

The Fabric of my Life, cont'd.

Sometimes I can't resist. It's my sense of humour. But this perfectly describes me right now! [Click on the image to see the caption below.] See the whole book here.

The fabric of my life

Constructing a little book of fabrics.

And lace.

And....

How it works

I sell my art on eBay at low prices because I not only want to make a living, but also offer affordability. They rarely reflect the amount of work that goes into making my pieces, but I'm happy to do it anyway.

However, when pieces don't sell on eBay, they revert to my website at full price.

I've added a new page to my website: click here for Ephemera Art.
These pieces are on eBay for a song.... but not for long!!!

Happy Easter

It's been a very long weekend.
I hope everyone is rested.

Have a beautiful new week.

Weekend update

[painting available on eBay]

I don't listen to music while I'm painting because the music, if there is to be any music, is in my head. While I was painting this, my inner voice started singing take me back to the Black Hills/the Black Hills of Dakota/to the beautiful Indian country that I love....

Spring is back. The air is benign, the robins are a comforting sight. I can take my walks again. The general mood is up: Coming out of the bank the other day, I heard a lilting male voice, redolent of the Caribbean, singing You are My Sunshine. I turned around and as he drew near, I joined in. We finished the song together, laughed, shook hands, and went our separate ways.

You have to create your own moments.

I'm offering some new collages on eBay. This is one of them.
And now, back to my work table.
Wishing you a peaceful day.

"And is there honey still for tea?"

[detail of set of 4 tags available on eBay]
I love tags. I love decorating tags, and I like a bit of fun. Yes, I'm a coffee-drinker, but in art you can do anything.
Tags are my flights of fancy.

There's always a way

[Finished piece available in my Etsy shop]

This piece of fabric has a "scene" on it. It's black and white, and I wanted to use it as a background for a quiltie. It's been sitting on my table for months because I didn't want to cover the scene. What to do? Last night the answer came. Enhance the scene, add elements to it, embroider it here and there. This is the result. Much better than covering it up! It needs a couple of finishing touches and it will be done.

Our Daily Grind

[This article was published in Your Health (now defunct) in 2001]

Ever since an Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi stumbled on the coffee berries that made his goats frisky when they fed on them, coffee has been inextricably linked to our culture.
Artists, writers and composers through the ages have all populated cafes, and so have lovers, boulevardiers and philosophers. Not just to drink coffee, once prized as a safe stimulant without the side effects of, say, alcohol, but to produce works of art about it, not least the great Johann Sebastian Bach who actually composed a Coffee Cantata, a humorous piece based on a family's passion for the brew.

In the last couple of decades, official opinions about coffee have yo-yo'd back and forth from linking coffee to some cancers, to then unlinking it, and finally reinstating it to its previous safe status. In an amazing turnaround, a recent study suggested that people who drink three to four cups of coffee a day are less likely to commit suicide, and just so that we don't too complacent, another study has warned that ingesting any caffeine before exercising can give you dangerously high blood pressure. Following the initial scare, a host of decafs hit the market, but they too were eventually and inevitably attacked on the grounds that the decaffeination process wasn't healthy. However, any links with cancer, and even suicide prevention, have never been proven, and the cancer risk was in fact nullified by later studies. The only thing a healthy person can reasonably be certain of is that in moderation -- about three cups a day, maximum -- coffee can be enjoyed safely.

For all of this, the passion for coffee continues. Moving light years away from the old electric coffee percolator, cafes and coffee purveyors covered the Canadian landscape; espresso machines shrunk in size and found their way from cafes and restaurants to the home kitchen; "gourmet" blends began migrating from specialty shops to corner variety stores. Cyberspace has been well and truly caffeinated with more information on the subject than you would think possible, and even the friendly skies have become coffee-conscious with United Airlines switching to Starbucks coffee for their inflight brew.

According to Fritz Kugler, roasting plant manager for Timothy's Coffees of the World, Canadians' preferences run to the lighter roasts; only about 30 percent of Canadians like the darker roasts, sometimes referred to as French roast. It's probably just a matter of taste, but there are also some fallacies clinging on, the most common being that strong-tasting coffee (dark roast) delivers far more caffeine than all the cups of weak coffee guzzled all day long in the offices of the land, and that instant coffee has less caffeine than other coffees. In truth, the caffeine content of coffee beans varies considerably: instant coffees, usually made from the robusta beans, contain the most caffeine, while the better quality arabica beans contain less. If anything, a dark-roast coffee contains slightly less caffeine than lighter roasts, but because the higher the roast, the less acidic the coffee, the resulting taste is stronger. Some people complain that coffee -- both regular and decaf -- upsets their stomach. Now, says Kugler, clinical studies are showing that it may not so much be the caffeine but some component in the bean's skin that is indigestible, and they have introduced a light, mild roast in both regular and decaffeinated, involving a process in which the skins are removed. Only time will tell.

Meanwhile our love affair with coffee continues unabated.

A new week....

[collage available on eBay; image by Teesha Moore; hat added by me.]

....begins with the Great Wet.
The view from my windows is veiled by a thin mist. Seagulls are pecking away at the sodden park floor, and the accompanying music is "drip, drip, drip". If this is spring, bring back winter!! Well, maybe not.

So I dip a biscotto in my coffee, and work at my table, trying not to think about having to go out soon. My umbrella is still at the bank where I forgot it.........
Have a cozy, dry day! (unless you're in Wales - hehe)

Weekend update

This is Phase 1 of my "production line"... ready to ship tomorrow. The sun is out today and the temperature is warm, which means I will go for a long walk to get all the kinks out. I love my work, but I need to detach now and then and "empty" myself.

My Bird Journal is finished. It was my biggest project to date, and I'm really happy with the results. You can see more of it on my website.

Wishing you a peaceful day.

Friday's child

[collage available on eBay]
It's one of those 24-hour rainy days that make me irritable and grumpy. It wouldn't be so bad if there were a dry lull, but, no. It just pours down worldwithoutend Amen.
It's on days like this that I miss my family; I miss being able to go over to my sister's and curl up on her couch and drink tea with her.

The park is sodden. I forgot my umbrella at the bank. I thought it better to just get my errands done and come home.
Hot chocolate!

Seek

Seek and you shall find. This is one of many sayings and words that sound so good and are thrown around like little wise baubles... but rarely explained.

What does this saying mean? To me this is the definition:

First, make sure that what you're seeking is viable.

Second, do the work.

Third, cultivate patience.

Solitude

This is how I work.

I'll leave you with this sneak peek for now, because deadlines are calling.

Have a fabulous day!
