In the last few days I've spent a lot of time researching if I should take the free upgrade to Windows 10. The free upgrade expires on Friday, so the message on my laptop keeps telling me. There are so many pros and cons that my head is swimming and I'm tempted to stay with what I know and what has worked well for me so far, which in my case is Windows 7.

My computer needs are simple. I have a laptop; I write, upload photos, use the Internet for my shop, information, and staying in touch. I don't have a cellphone because I don't need one. My land line is enough. When we had a power outage once that lasted a couple of days, the only thing that worked was that land line, so I'm attached to it.

Still, I thought a lot about why I've been reluctant so far. There is much in the upgrade that I don't need and wouldn't use. There is talk of future usage payment. Privacy issues. Forced upgrades.

Oh, and also, it's not cool for W10 to take away Spider Solitaire - it helps me wind down - although I could purchase it and the other games it apparently takes away.

So my answer to all of this is to go and make some art. Or play some Spider Solitaire to clear my mind ;-)

Simplicity is the removal of the useless and the unnecessary--source unknown

  1. I know where you are coming from Colette and I don't blame you. I updated my thingymebob on my apple phone and now I can't load my photos as I used to. It's very frustrating and I wish I hadn't bothered

  2. I upgraded and I am very happy with it. It is easier to use than the previous version and keeps a lot of the same feel. I think you also can undo. My computer actually upgraded by itself. I was miffed at first but am happy with it. I did not like the previous version which was either 7 or 8. To each his own, As long as you keep sharing with us, whatever you decide is alright!

  4. I wouldn't upgrade! On my older desktop - I am keeping 7. I like it so much more than 8 which is on my laptop. I upgraded my Laptop to 10 -- because it came with 8 and I like 10 better than 8 ( are you following?) . Also -- at work, Ray's company is even keeping 7 as long as possible. Because they like 7 better. And they are in the software industry!!!

  5. After much research, I've decided against it. The deal breaker was that you can't turn off AUTOMATIC updates in V. 10. (You can't review them before doing them.) Microsoft started updating my husband's computer to 10 automatically on April 30, the Cdn. tax deadline. My husband is a tax accountant and couldn't be without his computer that day. To lose that kind of control is not acceptable. I'm using 8 and it's working for me so I'm not switching!

  6. I have 10 only because my previous laptop was beginning to fail on me.
It seems a never-ending parade of upgrades for this and that!

  7. I no longer have a computer. I use an iPad and even though I miss a mouse and often iPad versions of things have limited features, I am happy with it. My husband has a Mac, so when I get completely stuck and frustrated I use his Mac. I feel your frustration, I wouldn't know what to do in your place. I love and don't love technology...
