It's been so long since I painted with watercolours that it took me a couple of days to start again. I was afraid of being out of practice, of having "forgotten" how to use watercolours -- I started my painting life with watercolours and became quite proficient, and now here I was feeling a little scared. I thought about this and then told myself it was like riding a bicycle: you may be out of practice but you never forget.

I began with simple exercises. Puddles of water, vague shapes, spattering.

Then something a little more controlled. Three tomatoes.

As always, the secret is no secret: Practise, practise, practise (the verb!).

Simplicity is the removal of the useless and the unnecessary--source unknown
