Reflections

E-mail from a journalist friend:

I have always wondered about the word "consumer" to describe human beings. We are consumers, according to the media and the rest. Consumer means someone/something that consumes, eats, burns. Fire consumes a building; a car consumes fuel. We have been reduced to "eaters." Not thinkers, not beings with conscience, with feelings, with a knowledge of good and evil. We exist to eat, to consume. The Consumer Society!

He is right, as far as I am concerned. I am not a "consumer"; I am a human being. I eat to live, and I enjoy my food, and there are things I like to buy, but I also think, feel, love, hurt, I know the difference between good and evil and live my life accordingly.
Have a peaceful Sunday.

  2. Love this! I don't consume my food - I relish it... I taste every mouthful and I give thanks as I do.
