Seeing with my mind's eye

This is how my process works when I have no idea what I'm going to make: My eye falls on a stack of little pieces of fabric. I place some pieces side by side and think I might make a background. So I place the pieces on another piece of fabric and stitch them in place.

Now I have a background but I don't see anything on it. So I fold it. Happily it's a nice size, so I think envelope. I'll stitch the sides and....but I don't see it.

So I think, maybe a cover for something, a little book perhaps. I stitch a label on the front. I go away and do something else. When I come back, I don't see a little book. So I open it up and place another piece of fabric on the inside. Then I spy the little charm I collaged, and place it down.

Then I see it: it's a card. I embellish the inside and stitch it to the background. Now it feels right.
