Friday's child: A Tale of Two eMails

Discovering the world (c) colette copeland

Retrieving my e-mail this morning, the nasty one jumped out at me: my first (and, I would hope, last) such e-mail. It came from an eBay person, who trashed my work, said it was not art in any form, that I was ripping people off, and further complained that I was actually getting bids, ending in a bitter "No wonder the world is in such a mess." My response? A few choice thoughts rippled through my brain (i.e., read my feedback, you obviously don't know art, bitter people like you make the world a mess, etc. etc.), but I knew that the best response was No Response.

It took me a minute or two to recover, then I went to eBay and placed this person on my blocked list just to make sure they don't try to sabotage my listings. I've never blocked anyone before, and it seemed fitting to give them that, um, honor!

And then I listed two new pieces!

I returned to my e-mail, and this time the "love your art" one jumped out at me. A sweet e-mail from someone who had been admiring my work and took the time to write and tell me so.

Life is good!

  2. why on earth do some people feel it necessary to be so hateful? You did the right thing with not responding and then blocking them.
Your work is a joyous feast for the eyes!!

  4. Your response of no response was just right. People like that don't care what you say. They just want to hurt people for whatever reason. Mostly I just feel sorry for them because they aren't able to enjoy life. Your art is always beautiful, and I'm sure some people are just jealous. I love coming here for the inspiration and the beauty I always find. Keep doing what you're doing. I love it.

I hadn't seen your art before, but I'm taken with it. I love the collage effect and the stitching all around. Textures, colors, designs...they tell a story all their own.

    Meilleurs voeux!!

  6. What would I do without you dear Colette and your beautiful art that graces my home and the homes of my loved ones..That person must be consumed with jealousy and ugliness in their own soul. You responded the right way and the only way...It is their loss...and obviously they cannot truely SEE or FEEL. My life and others lives is a better and lovelier place because of you! Have a lovely spring weekend sweetie! xxx000

  10. You did exactly the right thing Colette. Hate-filled people like that will never stop. They are so embittered. Quoting the writer - "no wonder the world is in such a mess."

  14. I am so sorry you received such a hateful email from someone who obviously does not know wonderful art when he/she sees it!

You did the very best thing in the circumstances. Not replying. And you know I did the same thing a while back when I received a nasty email from a fellow blogger. Best not to give energy to people who want to lash out and put their angry energy out there.

Very happy the next email you received was a lovely one.
I LOVE the art you are making right now. It is so, so beautiful!

  15. Oh Colette, that was utterly terrible. Your art is wonderful and fluid and touchable, and I can't understand some people...but you took the high road, good for you! Thank goodness when people take the time to tell you how wonderful your work is...

And gentle in their manner, they

  16. I can only imagine that the person who sent you the email is not getting any bids and so resents yours. I know you know this, but your art is very special and beautiful. It's very heartfelt and gorgeous to look at. It's all the wonderful things art should be. I am so happy that you have such a following!

We'll just send that person lots of love and wish for them to open their eyes because they are obviously missing out on a lot of beautiful things in life.

Lots of love to you Colette.

  17. Shame on that person! Why do people find it necessary to be so ugly and unkind. Obviously, the person does NOT know what they are talking about. Your work is beautiful...extraordinary...amazing art. Thank you for being such an inspiration!

  18. *sigh* - yep, I know all about 'those' kind of emails.. phht to them, they are obviously idiots to think your work is not art...
they must lead a sad, sad life if they have nothing better to do than send sick emails to people like you & I

  19. I'm reading all these posts in reverse order, trying to catch up. But you're right not to waste time or energy paying attention to negativity, whatever its source. xo
