 I'm ready for Spring. It's harder to push myself out of the house in winter. But push, I must.

My sister's birthday gift consisted of two boxes of gouache and watercolor paints. There's nothing like opening a fresh tube of glorious colour, loading a brush, and applying it with a certain abandon.

You paint something.
You put it aside.
You feel it needs something else to complete it.
So you forget about it.
You look at it once in a while.
Which is good.
You don't mess with it. You wait.
And then one day the finishing touch appears like magic.
Magic is the willingness to leave it alone and let it speak to you in its own time.

It's snowing. The real thing, not temporary or wet snow.

So you whip up the hot chocolate, and wander around trying this and playing with that. You start tidying up your paintings, one sits on top of the other, and presto! you have a new composition.

 If you know me, you know that I love brown paper. For the longest time I searched for heavy brown paper, not the usual kraft paper, but darker and much heavier. One day, my prayers were answered when I found it at Curry's Art supplies. It's scanning as greyish, but it really is brown.

I tried painting on it with black gouache.

It made me very, very happy!

Gouache on Japanese kozuke paper.
I prefer gouache to watercolour (even though I love using watercolours) because it goes on thick and silky. It's almost an alternative to acrylics, for me.
