One of my earliest memories is of a grandmother who made lace with a needle. She would roll fine muslin with her thumb and forefinger and "sew" a lace border, then make exquisite little corners of lace, sometimes quite intricate, all with a needle and thread. I absorbed the basic stitch just from watching. It went something like this (although mine is big and clumsy).
