Do you speak Elvish?

Even in the unhappiest of childhoods, there's a mysterious place where the child believes in elves and assorted magical beings. It's a gift, to help the child survive. I know. I've been there. And I was lucky to have a mother who had me reading by the age of 5, so that I could read about that magical world too.

Books have kept me going through the tough times, and keep me happy in the good times. To all the many authors whose books I read and enjoy, thank you! Don't ever stop writing.

I also learned to read when I was very young, and I still read daily. Couldn't do without it. And as reading was for you, it was and is for me the ultimate transporter. You perfectly described that protected bubble of wonderment that a child carries inside them. Mine is still within me, and we can all see through your art that you still carry yours as well.

We lived in a rural area with no bus service, and my neighborhood was made up of three small streets. In the summers I was home alone, so I ended up devouring all the old novels on Mom's bookshelves though they were well above my age level. (I also got out the 1950's era Betty Crocker cookbook and learned to bake. That's when I learned the difference between granulated and powdered sugar. The lesson I learned the hard was was that granulated is not for frosting.)
