Lest we forget

[view series here]
I've completed Nos. 7 and 8 in my First Nations series. I've incorporated photos of people from different Nations, some hauntingly beautiful, and artifacts from my collection. This photo is of Czele Marie, a Pima, and the beaded leather is Ojibway.

In Canada the Native Americans are also called, very appropriately, First Nations. They were here millenia before the Europeans arrived. For all that was done to them, they survive. I've always felt a kinship to the Navajo in particular, partly because of their tradition of "balance" in all things, partly because of their ability to survive under the worst conditions imposed on them by other human beings. Kit Carson and his Ute scouts are one example. They drove the Navajo off their lands and I won't go into the atrocities they committed. The Navajo prevailed in the end (The Long Walk).
The rest is mysterious, so I can't explain it.
Peace.

  4. Ahhh..Colette! I love the Native tribes. Here in Florida the Seminole are the original peoples, When I was traveling back across the US...I stopped at the Continental Divide.,,whereupon I met a Navajo who blessed me and my Dog ,Spot with a Navajo prayer. I a m going t o post a picture on my blog tomorrow with the story! It was amazing.

Alaska's First Peoples have a fascinating history, and its richness astounds me. Our Arctic Inupait Eskimoes are incredible people, and have survived the harshest climate imaginable. They are whalers, dancers, sewers of skin into incredible parkas. I hope you will include them in your First Nations series.
